The Goal

In this tutorial “Submit Sitemap to Search Engines – SEO WordPress“, I explain where and how to submit your sitemap so that popular search engines index your website sooner rather than later.

Requirements

The activities in this tutorial require the Yoast SEO plugin to be installed, with:

  • advanced features enabled
  • sitemaps enabled

The Method

Search engines need to know about your website and index it before SEO efforts can begin returning results. Google is the most popular search engine of today, but why limit yourself. We suggest that you should also submit your sitemap for indexing to Bing and Yandex.

Note: Yahoo and Ask are no longer relevant and should be ignored.

Google Search Console

Google requires little introduction, you’d be hard pressed to find somebody who hasn’t used or doesn’t know what Google is. Follow these steps to setup Google Search Console and submit your sitemap. If these steps don’t work, you can find Google’s official steps here.

  1. Go to: Google Search Console
  2. Sign in or setup a Google account if you don’t have one
  3. Add your website
  4. Verify website rights
  5. Submit you site map, from the sidebar go to: Crawl → Sitemaps → Add/Test Sitemap
  6. Enter the URL and then submit

Bing Webmaster Tools

Follow these steps to setup Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. If these steps don’t work, you can find Microsoft’s official steps here.

  1. Go to: Bing Webmaster Tools
  2. Sign in or setup a Microsoft account if you don’t have one
  3. Add your site and sitemap
  4. Verify website rights
  5. Submit you site map, from the sidebar go to: Sitemaps → Enter the URL and Submit

Yandex Webmaster

Follow these steps to setup Yandex Webmaster and submit your sitemap.

  1. Go to: Yandex Webmaster
  2. Sign in or setup a Yandex account if you don’t have one
  3. Add your website
  4. Verify website rights
  5. Submit you site map, from the sidebar go to: Indexing → Sitemap files → Add
